  Nordic Spaces secures contract for book series with Ashgate

  The Nordic Spaces research programme has secured an agreement with British academic publisher Ashgate for the the publication of a book series, "The Nordic Experience", consisting of five volumes. Three of the books will be included in the Ashgate History list, one in the Politics list and one in the Music list, but the series as a whole will be promoted across a variety of disciplines. In total the books contain close to 60 chapters addressing various aspects of the Nordic region. The series has been accepted after a rigorous peer review conducted by 10 international experts.   The scholars of the Nordic Dance in Nordic Spaces project have published a new book at Tapir forlag, Trondheim. This book fills a gap in existing dance studies literature on the Nordic countries, and contains eight chapters addressing different aspects of the role of dance in the formation of Norden.   The British-Lithuanian Society introduces a special issue of the academic journal Central Europe dealing with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The new issue will be introduced by Dr Richard Butterwick (School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London, and Dr Eglė Rindzevičiūtė (Linköping University, Sweden) at the Lithuanian Embassy in London on January 10.     The objective of this project is to examine the ways geographical and imperial space is imagined and represented in Russian cultural practices in the decades preceding the fall of the Soviet Union.

  • Distant news and local opinion: How the Telegraph Affected Spatial and Temporal Horizons in Northern Scandinavia, 1850-1880

    The electric telegraph lines constructed across Europe starting in the late 1840's profoundly changed conditions for long-distance communication in the region. This project analyses the effects of the electric telegraph on northern Scandinavia.

  • Arctic Norden: Science, Diplomacy and the Formation of a Post-War European North

    This project concerns the formation of “Arctic Norden” as a composite of science, diplomacy, and policy in the Cold War context.

  • Nordic Profile: The Image of the Nordic Community in Latvian Printed Mass Media from the End of XIX Century to XXI Century

    This project studies images of the Nordic states in Latvian printed mass media from the end of the 19th century to the 21st century.

  • Baltic regionalism: Constructing Political Space(s) in Northern Europe, 1800-2000

    The project studies the long-term formation of regional identities in Northern Europe. It focuses on a case study of the area of the current Baltic States.

  • Nordic Spaces in the North and North America: Heritage Preservation in Real and Imagined Nordic Places

    How are Nordic spaces created expressively in the Nordic countries and North America? How do such spaces give shape to cultural heritage, delimit identities and draw boundaries via recognition of difference?

  • The Nordic Model of Democracy: Diffusion, Competition, Europeanisation

    The project concerns the Nordic "model" of democracy – defined in terms of both institutional patterns and the values with which political discourse is laden – and its relation to the Baltic states.

  • National History – Nordic Culture: Negotiating identity in the museums

    This project investigates how images of Norden as a supranational identity have provided, and continue to provide, arenas for negotiating political, military, social, economical, ethical and cultural understandings of community in specific public and nationalised contexts, using museums as the focal point.

  • Dance in Nordic Spaces: The Formation of Corporeal Identities

    The project Dance in Nordic Spaces aims to investigate dance and dancing as participants in the development of “Norden”, with a focus on comparative perspectives from the late 19th through the 20th century. The project group consists of eight scholars, from four Nordic countries, who represent a large field of current dance research in Norden.
